Evaluating Employee Performance
Employers are not required to evaluate employees. Many employers however do periodically evaluate employees to provide a standardized basis for pay increases, bonuses, promotions, discipline or termination. Evaluations can also provide strong evidence for defending against various types of employee claims.
However, employee evaluations can also create problems for the employer if they are improperly conducted, administered unfairly or are discriminatory in any way. Employers with an evaluation policy should make certain that it is followed consistently.
